The Art of Block Printing
Block printing is one of those details your customers notice, even if they don’t always know why.
Ever pick something up in store and wonder how it came to life? Chances are, it was block printed.
At tag, we use this technique across our textiles and paper goods to bring depth, character, and a handcrafted feel to everyday pieces.
Block printing is an ancient art form that dates back centuries, with roots in India, China, and Japan. Each design begins with a hand-carved wooden block, created by skilled artisans who have honed their craft over generations.
How Block Print Works:
Design
Artisans carefully hand carve intricate patterns into wooden blocks.
Ink
Each block is dipped in dye, ensuring an even, consistent application.
The block is pressed onto fabric, transferring the design by hand.
Repeat
Layer by layer, color by color, the pattern builds into a rich, dimensional print.
The result is something slightly imperfect in the best way, full of character, and made to stand out on the shelf.
Every year, we travel to India to source new carved blocks and collaborate directly with artisans. It is a hands-on process that results in prints you simply cannot replicate digitally.
In our Everyday catalog, you will find three distinct block designs, each one showcasing the beauty of this technique.
